The decision to offer a Script Analysis class for working actors was not easy but necessary.
Actors have to know what to act. Three to four weeks of experimentation in rehearsals is rarely enough for any but the seasoned veteran (those with over 20 years experience).
The approach we use for script analysis is the invention of Harold Clurman, co-founder of the famed Group Theater of New York, and possibly the finest critic and dramaturge this country has produced.
One may read about this approach in Mr. Clurman's book, "On Directing." Reading about it and the actual practice of his approach are completely different experiences though. Clarifying each moment of text, finding the emotional experience of the moment, puts a specific and instinctual understanding in the actor.
This is painstaking work but gives the actor a proven technique to solving issues such as: The spine of the play or character; the arc of a given character, scene or section; specifically identifying the pivotal moments of the scene; and whatever 'little actions' one may find that clarify the aforementioned.
What this process provides is a means by which an actor may extract the acting from the text.
So, let's start March 1st be the beginning date. Meet Saturdays at 12 Noon in our studio and theater at 140 Western Avenue West in downtown Seattle. The process, for a simple one-act, takes about 12 hours so we'll meet for three hours, each Saturday, for four weeks.
Learning this approach to script analysis will serve you your entire life. $200 is not too much to pay for this practical tool.
Class size is restricted so reserve a place today by eMail.
